The term “differentiation” refers to the division of the market into sections, or segments, that are definable, available, supportable, profitable, and have the potential to expand. In other words, due to time, expense, and effort constraints, a business will be unable to target the entire market. Market segmentation is one method for identifying a target market. Demographic (population statistics), geographic (location), psychographic (personality or lifestyle), gain (product features), and volume are the five basic types of segmentation (amount purchased).
