Blend modes (also known as blending modes[1]) are used in digital image editing and computer graphics to control how two layers are blended together. In most applications, the default blend mode actually obscures the lower layer by covering it with whatever is present in the top layer (see alpha compositing). However, since each pixel has a numerical representation, blending two layers is possible in a variety of ways. Most graphics editing programs, such as Adobe Photoshop and GIMP, let you change the basic blend modes, for example, by adjusting the opacity of the top “layer.” The top “layer” does not have to be an application layer; it could be created with a painting or editing tool. The top “wall” is also known as the “active layer” or “blend layer.”
